PANJIM: Launching a tirade against Panjim MLA Atanasio Babush Monserrate, the group Xhektareancho Ekvat Taleigao (XAT) lamented how the fields in the constituency are getting damaged.
Demanding that the Taleigao Panchayat holds a gram sabha immediately, XAT at a media briefing held on Tuesday, pointed out that the government issued a notification asking panchayats to convene the sabha on February 28.
While explaining that panchayats have to anyway hold gram sabhas four times a year, Pundalik Raikar of XAT criticised the Taleigao sarpanch for skipping these meetings and called for his disqualification if he fails to convene a sabha as mandated by the panchayat department.
He added that the major issue of the fate of the fields in Taliegao will be raised at the gram sabha where they want the panchayat to respond to their queries regarding the acquisition of land for the new panchayat ghar construction.
He also insisted that they will not compromise on the issue and will fight to protect the fields and will not accept a compromise of a ground that had allegedly been offered to them.
At the media briefing, two farmers were present, whose fields have not been receiving water supply, and Raikar used their example to question how commercial establishments have been receiving adequate water.
He also made allegations regarding land irregularities and blamed Monserrate for the same.
He further urged the public not to vote for Monserrates in view of the upcoming CCP elections and in general, while alleging that the people of Taleigao have suffered enough.
