MAPUSA: A loaded goods truck plunged off the Guirim overbridge on Wednesday, crashing onto the service road below. One labourer, a native of Jharkhand, was killed, while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries, reported Mapusa police. They were all treated at the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa and discharged after receiving medical care.

The deceased was identified as Solomon Durbin Hembrom, 21, a resident of Tivim and native of Jharkhand. The driver, Daniram Jantan Murmu, 26, also a resident of Tivim and native of West Bengal, was operating the truck, which bore a Goa registration.

The accident occurred around 5 am, resulting in severe damage to the vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have dozed off at the wheel due to the early morning hour. Consequently, the truck crashed through the railing of the overbridge, plummeting approximately 30 metres onto the service road below. The impact proved fatal for the labourer, who lost his life on the spot.

Upon receiving news of the incident, concerned locals alerted the Mapusa police for assistance. To ensure the smooth flow of traffic, authorities engaged an earthmover to remove the damaged vehicle from the service road.

Mapusa Police have booked the driver for rash and negligent driving under Sections 279, 337 and 338, 304-A of IPC and 192 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
