panjim: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) on Thursday remanded Zenito Cardozo, accused in the St Cruz shootout incident, to five days police custody. The history-sheeter had surrendered before the Sub-Divisional Police Officer at Police Head Quarters on Wednesday followed by his arrest.

Hiding for nearly two months, Cardozo had surrendered while his anticipatory bail plea is pending before the High Court of Bombay at Goa. He is booked for conspiring in attempt to murder and under the Arms Act.

With Cardozo’s arrest, the total persons arrested in the case records at 24, of whom some are bailed out. The Old Goa Police had registered two FIRs that saw arrests of his close associates for murder and attempted murder. An attack was in fact plotted to allegedly kill Imran Bepari, member of a rival gang, at his residence at St Cruz.  Sonu Yadav, who was among 13-14 armed attackers, was accidentally killed in the attack.

Cardozo’s custody will thereafter be sought in another case of kidnapping and intimidation registered at Panjim Police Station, also in June 2020.
