PANJIM: The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on the government leaving the sugarcane farmers in the lurch with the Sanjeevani Sugar factory struggling to start operations.
“There is fraud being exposed which has brought the activities in Sanjeevani Sugar factory to standstill and that too, at a time, when most of farmers needed support from the State Government with a hike in cane prices, supply laborer’s, transport to carry the crops from distant areas to the factory as done in the past. Already cash trapped poor farmers were compelled to do all needed activities on their own and now in danger of losing everything with no assurance from the factory for releasing of their payments,” said the leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar said in a media statement on Thursday.
He said the current issue has once again unveiled complete failure of the ‘current corrupt inefficient BJP government.’ “This headless State government, with non-existing ailing Chief Minister and non-functioning Ministry, has been ensuring a fast deterioration of the state economy and livelihood of the people. The economy of people of Goa has been brought to standstill by this BJP government since 2012 and further taking absolutely no action after closure of mining with Supreme Court judgement citing illegalities of the State government in allocating mining leases selectively and using corrupt methods,” he said.
Kavlekar has pinned his hope on South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar who recently promised to restart Sanjeevani by December 5. “I hope it is not an election agenda. The harvesting time of sugarcane is passing away so it is high time to start a process. I would also appeal and demand to the government to prepare a concrete plan for next year to avoid such difficulties for the farmers. Let it not be an agenda for upcoming Loksabha election,” he added. The party has sought support and financial package to people in the cash strapped regions.
