PANJIM: Goa’s “killer” roads claimed 228 lives in 2,365 accidents from January to October this year, a data released by the Department of Transport has revealed.

As per the data, 39 persons were killed in 272 accidents in January, 27 persons were killed in 232 accidents in February, 30 persons in 246 accidents in March, 27 persons in 231 accidents in April, 19 persons in 261 accidents in May, 17 persons in 231 accidents in June, 24 persons in 209 accidents in July, 13 persons in 232 accidents in August, 16 persons in 227 accidents in September and 16 persons were killed in 224 accidents in October this year.

Out of the 224 accidents in October, 116 accidents took place in South Goa while 108 accidents were reported in North Goa. Of 224 accidents 15 were fatal, 22 with grievous injuries, 41 with minor injuries and there were no injuries reported in 146 accidents.

Of the 15 fatal accidents, eight were reported in South Goa while 7 were reported in North Goa. In those 15 accidents, 16 persons lost their lives. Among those who lost their lives, 10 were two-wheeler riders, two pillion riders, one driver, two pedestrians 

and a passenger.

In the 224 accidents, 392 vehicles were involved. The vehicles involved in accidents were buses (13), mini buses (two), trucks (17), tankers (three), tempos (10), jeeps (8), cars (160), pick-up vans (8), three-wheelers (7), two-wheelers (158) and there were (six) vehicles, which are yet to be identified.
