Goa’s Romeo aims to uplift Delhi Dynamos

ALLAN D’CRUZ

PANJIM: Former FC Goa’s poster boy Romeo Fernandes will look to keep his emotions aside on his return to Fatorda as he faces his hometown side on Wednesday. The most loved former Gaur is aiming to break the Goan hearts as he wishes to score against FC Goa to take his side ahead in the league standings.

“We don’t want to be at the bottom of the table at the end of the league, so we will try our best tomorrow. I will try to create many chances and score the winning goal,” said Romeo Fernandes, who is playing his first season in different colours after representing the Gaurs for three consecutive seasons.

Delhi Dynamos are currently rooted at the bottom of the table with eleven points and a win against FC Goa will take them to eighth position. However, the result will also pile further misery on the Gaurs for their race towards the top-four finish.

“We are eager to win and climb the table. We will give our 100% for tomorrow’s game and hope for the best,” added the former FC Goa winger.

However, Romeo Fernandes thanked the Goan fans for their continuous support and looking forward to a warm reception at Fatorda.

“I just want to thank all my fans for the immense love and support they have shown me throughout the 4 years of Indian Super League. I do hope they cheer me on tomorrow, no matter what the result maybe,” expressed Romeo.

The Goan lad has taken his move away to Delhi as a challenge and a learning experience.

“I feel a change as I am in a different team with players I have not worked with before. Each player is different and their style of playing is different. I am out of my comfort zone; but at the same time I am meeting new players, developing my skills and learning valuable lessons from the coach,” explained Romeo.

Romeo has featured 11 times for Delhi Dynamos in the current season, however, he failed to get the same limelight as he got during his FC Goa days. The midfielder stated that all the players in every team give their best for the team and for the fans. However, the fan support for Goan players is stronger in Goa in comparison to other states.

Delhi managed to register just three wins in the current season. Delhi Dynamos FC Head Coach Miguel Portugal was quick to indicate that Romeo was one player who had vastly improved since the initial phase.

“When Romeo started off with us, his performance was not up to the mark, and he was not a regular,” he stated.  “But now, he is a regular player in the team and has improved his game a lot over the past months and I have gained a lot of confidence in him. He has grown to become a very important player in our team.”
