Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a parliamentarian from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been formally charged with sexual harassment of five female wrestlers by the Delhi Court.

The court, after thorough consideration, announced its decision, finding sufficient evidence to frame charges against Brij Bhushan under sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with each victim. However, he was acquitted of a charge brought forth by a sixth wrestler.

Brij Bhushan, formerly the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), had been at the center of controversy in 2023 when prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, demanded his removal from office, alleging sexual harassment during training camps.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Priyanka Rajpoot, delivered the judgment following an adjournment on Tuesday, citing necessary corrections in the order.

The charge sheet, filed on June 15, detailed accusations against Brij Bhushan and Vinod Tomar, former assistant secretary of the WFI, including criminal intimidation under various sections of the IPC. Tomar is alleged to have aided in the commission of the crimes and is facing trial accordingly.

The comprehensive 1,599-page charge sheet also contains statements from 44 police officials and photographic evidence capturing events related to the allegations.

The development has sent ripples through both political and sporting circles, particularly amidst ongoing general elections in the country. The case underscores the urgent need for accountability and justice in cases of sexual harassment, especially within institutions entrusted with nurturing sporting talent.
