Every year on November 22, the Church of Our Lady of Merces in Merces celebrates the feast of St Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. On this day, members of Goan brass bands, come together at the church compound and perform. More than 50 musicians from across Goa, came together to give thanks to God on Tuesday, for the talent of music that he had bestowed upon them.
The legend goes that Cecilia was a Christian who had taken a vow of chastity but was forced to marry a pagan called Valerian. Instead of taking part in her wedding, she sang to God in her heart — thus becoming the patron saint of music and musicians.
