On the occasion of Official Language Day, Herald TV decided to look at the Goa Konkani Academy which is located in Panjim. The building of the Goa Konkani Academy is in extremely bad shape physically. Further though Konkani is the official language there is very little funding or little support for authors to publish their works in Konkani.
The building is located in a dingy ground floor space near the Government colony, at Patto, Panjim. The cement from the roof had completely come off during the June-September 2022 heavy rains. The structure was also leaking profusely, posing a threat to the books with the Academy. When will the Goa Konkani Academy be located in a new building even as the govt spends crores on other infrastructure?
It is also reported that the Goa Konkani Academy has cut down on staff due to poor financial support from the Government
and the staff are regularly paid their salaries late. Most of the schemes for the publication of literature and books in Konkani are defunct due to poor funding from the government, it is reported.
