The Anti Narcotic Cell (ANC) of the Goa Police has uncovered a psilocybin mushroom plantation at a rented premise in Madhlawada, Arambol. The operation, hailed as one of the largest in recent times, resulted in the arrest of Evgeny Morkovin, a 33-year-old Russian national, in possession of a substantial quantity of illegal drugs valued at Rs. 1.70 crores in the international market.
Acting on intelligence inputs, ANC authorities identified Morkovin as a key figure in the illicit drug trade, particularly in the distribution of psilocybin mushrooms, also known as "magic mushrooms." After meticulous surveillance and confirmation of the information, ANC personnel raided the accused's rented premises, leading to the seizure of a commercial quantity of psilocybin mushrooms and Ganja.
During the raid, it was discovered that Morkovin not only trafficked narcotics but also cultivated psilocybin mushroom buds in numerous glass jars, weighing approximately 7.93 kilograms. Additionally, around 150 mushroom spores intended for further cultivation were confiscated, along with equipment used for mushroom cultivation, including syringes and specially fabricated containers.
Psilocybin, the psychoactive component of magic mushrooms, has seen a surge in popularity despite being banned under the NDPS Act. The substance, known for inducing altered thinking and hallucinations, has attracted interest among various demographics, especially youngsters.
The raid, conducted under the supervision of ANC officials including PSI Sunil Falkar and assisted by a team of dedicated police personnel, underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies in combating drug-related crimes. Further investigation into the case is being led by PSI Manjunath Naik of the Anti Narcotic Cell.
The Directorate General of Police (DGP) Goa has announced a commendation for the ANC team for their successful operation in dismantling a significant narcotics operation within the state.
