In a bid to ease parking woes in Vasco, the Mormugao Municipal Council has unveiled plans to introduce pay parking, aiming to generate revenue for the council. Officials from the municipality conducted a joint inspection with various departments on Tuesday to identify specific locations for this initiative.
The proposed scheme will encompass the allocation of three lanes dedicated to implementing pay parking, to instill better traffic discipline in the area.
“The entire lane near Ashok Cine has been selected, including both the lanes near the Mormugao Municipality building and the lane near the post office has been identified for the pilot project. People park haphazardly. We are starting this on trial basis for four-wheeler and will then go on to two-wheelers,” said Mormugao Municipality Chairperson, Girish Borkar.
Shailesh Kavlekar, Vasco Traffic PI stated that the move is necessary as people blame the authorities for inadequate parking space. “People park their cars and leave for hours causing an inconvenience to others. People come with their vehicles and go to the market, and then we are blamed. Even though we tell people not to park they continue doing so, hence it was decided to initiate pay parking,” he said.
Authorities stated that both rent-a-bike and rent-a-car services will also be subject to paying for parking under this scheme. “We’ve noticed both rent-a-bike and rent-a-car services park their vehicles and occupy stretches, we have even booked cases against some. So even they will have to pay,” stated Kavlekar.
In fact, RTO officer JMR Rebello revealed that 32 challans have been issued to rent-a-bikes that are randomly parked in the Port Town. “We have booked them under disobedience section, there will be a show cause notice sent to them after which further action will be taken,” said Rebello.
The details regarding the fee structure and the commencement dates are yet to be disclosed.
