The Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA) has once again commenced the process of demolishing three additional houses in the funnel zone of Dabolim Airport, sparking controversy as homeowners claim they possess all the necessary permissions, including Naval NOC (No Objection Certificate) to construct houses with a height of 3.5 meters.
This recent development follows the partial demolition of 11 houses in the same area on February 16th, where MPDA cited height restrictions as the primary reason. The affected residents, numbering over a thousand, strongly opposed the demolition, asserting that they have been subjected to unwarranted harassment despite having the required approvals in place.
House owners, expressing their frustration, had emphasized that they have endured in silence until now, only to face action from authorities after their houses were built. Despite possessing all necessary permissions, including the assurance of housing for everyone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, residents feel unsupported in their time of need. "These houses were built 15 years ago on private land with sale deeds and mutations in our possession. We've invested heavily, pledging our assets and taking loans. Now, facing demolition, it feels unjust," one resident had lamented.
Questioning the sudden enforcement, residents had argued that the authorities should investigate those who sold them the land rather than targeting homeowners who have invested significantly. They had also raised concerns about discriminatory treatment, pointing out nearby lamp posts and natural formations that exceed the prescribed heights.
Residents had expressed their preparedness to vacate if necessary, but they demanded fair compensation at current rates for their land and homes. They questioned the rationale behind the demolitions and expressed suspicion about the selective targeting of their properties.
In response to the outcry, MPDA member secretary Sanjay Anurlekar had clarified that the demolitions were carried out in compliance with High Court directives. He shad tated, "The High Court mandates clearing illegalities, informed by Navy data. While 11 houses are under demolition, more may follow. We will proceed as directed."
