The suspension of 142 Members of Parliament from both Houses of Parliament prompted a robust protest from opposition parties on Friday, as leaders and representatives rallied against what they perceived as undemocratic measures. They condemned the BJP's alleged suppression of opposition voices, asserting the INDIA alliance's resolve to challenge and overturn the NDA led by the BJP in the upcoming elections.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao denounced the attack on the opposition within the parliamentary setting, condemning the BJP's behavior as dictatorial and disrespectful towards the country's democratic values.

“They were fighting for their rights and this shows the dictatorial approach of this government. They charged them with several sections of the IPC and criminal offences which could be debated. The MP’s only wanted to know from the Prime Minister and the Home Minister why there was a security breach,“ said Alemao.  He further stated: “Most senior MLA Pratapsingh Rane has also stated that you cannot silence the voices of the opposition.”

Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira echoed similar sentiments, characterizing the suspension as a dire blow to democracy. “ Compare history and compare today and see that what is done is a murder of democracy. The govt. does not believe in democracy, they use it as a tool to blow a trumpet and ascend into power. They use democracy to shout that they’re with the people and thereby mislead them,” said Alvares.

Expressing concern about the future, Alvares stated: “This according to me is an unwritten emergency and we need to stand together to ensure that dark and evil days don’t come again.”
