Rospin Rodrigues from Cavelossim is steering change by becoming South Goa’s first lady to navigate the streets in a vibrant pink electric auto-rickshaw. Her journey is not just about commuting; it's a story of independence and contribution to her family's income.
Formerly employed in housekeeping at a local hotel, Rospin embarked on this path with a desire to contribute to her family's income. Encouraged by her brother, she embraced the idea of driving a rickshaw.
"My brother encouraged me to start this business. I was hesitant initially, given the unconventional nature for women, but after discussing it with a friend who also supported the idea, I decided to take the plunge," reveals Rospin.
For the past five months, Rospin has been navigating the streets of Margao, Mobor and neighbouring areas ferrying passengers with her distinctive pink electric rickshaw. She explains, “I avoid long-distance trips due to charging point constraints, common with electric rickshaws. Nevertheless, I'm content with my earnings.”
Rospin credits her brother for teaching her the nuances of driving the auto-rickshaw, a skill she acquired in just two weeks. "At first, fear gripped me, but with my brother's guidance, I not only learned but also gained confidence, I took him along for the first eight days as I was scared. Now, I navigate the streets with confidence," says Rospin.
As the sole woman in South Goa steering a pink rickshaw, Rospin becomes a symbol of positivity. Passersby often greet her with smiles and thumbs-up gestures. “I encourage other women to start their small businesses and be self-independent,” Rospin says, urging women to break free from conventional roles.
