STREET VOICES : Recently repaired roads develop potholes in Panjim

The government has ‘devised’ various ways to ensure that there are no potholes on Goan roads, including purchasing costly jet patchers. However, the result is there for everyone to see. In this edition of Street Voices, Herald TV asked people their reaction to recently repaired roads which have developed potholes in Panjim within weeks of their repair.

"Seeing the roads in Panjim, one is confused whether the roads ever existed. There are big potholes which have developed on roads which are supposed to have been just repaired. This also came up because the Court intervened. Seeing the condition of the roads, it appears as if corruption has become a way of life. But what can you do when the commissions are so high. Now who is responsible? PWD, Smart City or CCP? The way things are going on, it appears the administration just doesn’t care and this is happening all over Goa."

Trajano D’Mello, Political Analyst

"Panjim roads are become so bad and the city is so dirty, I have never seen this is the last 60 years. I feel like laughing and crying at the same time. Laughing because elected representatives of the ruling party are blaming the rains. Panjim is a city set on the river bank, so the river will rise in the rains. You are only concentrating how to give licences for new buildings. You are not concentrating on how the water will drain, how the people will walk, the deteriorating condition of the roads. I feel like crying because the people of Panjim like to suffer and in the end they vote for the ruling party."

Rui Ferreira, advocate

"Not only Panjim, but even roads in Ribandar, which is a part of Panjim, has huge potholes. The entire road is in a very bad condition. The contractors are using third rate materials. The people are suffering in a big way. Everywhere one can just see the loose jelly. There is no sight of tar used. It is not even one month since they tarred this road. Smart City is also doing work here, but what is the fault of the Ribandkars, that they should suffer this fate? People have even died due to accidents caused by these potholes. There should be a PWD task force to repair roads especially during monsoons, but that is not seen anywhere."
