Pale local accused of kidnapping

BICHOLIM: A 24-year-old man from Pale has been accused of kidnapping a 17-year-old girl at Chinchwada-Pale since November last year.

According to Bicholim Police, the girl’s mother complained that her daughter, who was working as a housemaid, was missing since November 19, 2012.

Police said the girl’s mother had earlier registered a missing complaint, while the kidnapping case was registered on Tuesday.

Police further informed that the whereabouts of the girl is not known and the accused is reported absconding. Bicholim Police registered the case under Section 363 IPC and Section 8 (1) (2) of Children Act and PSI T P Walke is investigating the case.

 

UP native drowns at Calangute beach

CALANGUTE: A 24-year-old native of Uttar Pradesh drowned at Calangute beach on Monday.

According to Calangute Police, Zahir Alam Mansuri expired in GMC Hospital in Bambolim and the body has been preserved in GMC morgue. PSI Nitin Haldankar is investigating the case.

 

Morjim local found hanging

PERNEM: A 26-year-old man from Kacholiwada-Morjim was found hanging at Kacholiwada on Monday.

According to Pernem Police, the body of Sandesh Shetgaonkar was handed over to his relatives for final rites. PSI V Chodankar is investigating the case.

 

Dabolim local dies after consuming poison

PORVORIM: A man from Dabolim died after he allegedly consumed poison in Mapusa yard on Monday.

According to Mapusa Police, Melwin D’Souza expired in GMC Hospital in Bambolim and the body has been preserved in GMC morgue for post-mortem. PSI Prajyot Fadte is investigating the case.

 

Miscreants damage cross at Ucassaim

PORVORIM: Miscreants damaged a Cross opposite a general store at Paliem-Dupem, Ucassaim, on Monday.

According to Mapusa Police, Shubanand Mandrekar from Ucassaim complained that some persons damaged the Cross which was erected by the Christian community near the general store at Paliem-Dupem. PSI Prajyot Fadte is investigating the case.

 

Corlim panch passes away

OLD GOA: Former sarpanch and Corlim Panch Purshottam Dhulapkar passed away after a brief illness early Tuesday morning.

Dhulapkar (47) was admitted in GMC Hospital few days back due to high blood pressure.

A large number of people including family members, neighbours and others attended the final rites of the departed panch on Tuesday morning.

It may be recalled that Dhulapkar was elected as panch from Ward 5 of Corlim Panchayat.

 

Mumbai couple drowns at Candolim

CALANGUTE: A couple from Mumbai drowned while a man employed at a shack in Calangute was saved in separate incidents at Candolim and Calangute beaches on Tuesday. According to reports, Vijay Kumar and his wife, Mala, entered a non-swim zone at Candolim beach. Suddenly, a lifeguard observed a foreign tourist shouting for help and rushed towards the spot. The lifeguard secured Mala, while the foreign tourist assisted in bringing Vijay to the shore.

The two victims were shifted to the Candolim PHC, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

At Calangute beach, Sunil Kumar (23), working at a shack in Calangute, entered in a non-swim zone along with his friends, but was unable to return to the shore. Lifeguards rushed to the spot and brought him ashore.

 

Section 144 imposed  at Porvorim

PANJIM: The District Magistrate, North Goa, has issued an order imposing Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 within the radius of 500 meters around Assembly Complex, Porvorim and the area under Panjim Police Station in view of Legislative Assembly session. The order prohibits assembly or collection of five or more persons, carrying of firearms or weapons of offence such as lathis, swords, daggers or spears, burning of fire crackers near petrol pumps and at the venue of the meetings etc, use of loudspeakers and the shouting of slogans in any public place, street, road, square, thoroughfare, by-lane or any other open space within the radius of 500 meters around Assembly Complex, Porvorim. The order comes into force from 9 am on January 28 and shall remain so till February 1, till the Assembly Session is over.

 

The Tempest to be staged at KA on Jan 28

PANJIM: The Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa in collaboration with Kala Academy and Abhinaya Theatre Village, Trivandrum will be organising “Indian Tempest”, an English play written by William Shakespeare and presented by Footsbarn Travelling Theatre Company from France on January 28, at 7 pm at Open Air Auditorium, Kala Academy, Campal, Panjim. This will be a rare opportunity for the theatre lovers from Goa to witness a high class drama of international level in Goa and to interact with the artistes after the play. The show is free and the entry passes are available at the facilitation counter of Directorate of Art and Culture, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panjim and Kala Academy, Campal, Panjim during working office hours on first come first basis.  Some seats are reserved.

 

Feast of St Alphonsa, St Sebastian

VALPOI: The Kerala catholic community residing in Goa will celebrate the feast of St Alphonsa and St Sebastian at Pilar Seminary on January 27. The Pontifical Mass will be held at 9.30 am with Rev Dr Joseph Pandarasseril, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Kottayam, as the main celebrant along with Fr Thomas Moolechalil and Fr Thomas Kalari Parambil, stated the press note released by general convenor Benny Ethakkad.

 

Seminar on biodiversity

PANJIM: Clube Nacional, Panjim is organizing a seminar on ‘Biodiversity in Goa’ to sustain Goa’s needs and for holistic ecosystem development’ on January 24 from 4 pm onwards at the Clube premises. Ms Alina Saldanha, the chairperson of Goa State Biodiversity Board and the Minister for Environment, Forests would be the chief guest.

 

Yuva Srujan Puraskar to be awarded

PANJIM: A total of eight persons in the filed field of music/dance, drama/tiatr, folk art, creative photography/painting, craft, sculpture, bhajan/kirtan, literature and film will be awarded Yuva Srujan Puraskar. The awardees are honoured with a memento, certificate of appreciation and a financial purse to the extent of Rs 20,000 per awardee. This year the awards will be presented for 2 years 2011-12 and 2012-13. The following artists will receive the Yuva Srujan Puraskar (Nav-Sarjan Chetana Puraskar) for 2011-12: Shilpa Duble Parab (music), Miss Sonia Sirsat (music), Matheus Correia (comedian Selvy for tiatr), Manohar Bhingi (mimicry), Paresh Narendra Kamat (literature), Pradeep Naik (painting), Damodar Chari (bhajan/kirtan) and Ms Marianela Philgina Mascarenhas Dias (folk art); and for 2012-13: Neville Pereira (music), Sharad S Mathkar (music), Sidhanath Buyao (music), Sonia Rodrigues Sabharwal (painting), Sushant Khedekar (craft), Rajay Pawar (literature), Romaldina Joana Fernandes (Roma for tiatr) and Nilesh Mahale (drama). Youth day celebrated at Majorda

PANJIM: Basilite open unit of Scouts & Guides, Majorda, celebrated the youth day, recently. After the inaugural ceremony of flag hoisting in horse shoe formation, Pamela Gracias, assisted by Regina Faleiro, awarded the Pratham Sopan Badges to guides Chetana and Chetali Achari, Prya Saroj and Sandhya Chavan and Ranger Pravesh Badge to Loraine Antao. The Commissioner Francis Rebello enrolled Shawn Braganza, Nelroy D'Costa, Dinesh Yerulkar as Pravesh Rovers and Scout Shubam Saroj was awarded Prathan Sopan Badge. These two teams completed their prescribed studies, under the guidance of Scout Guide leaders Mario A Pereira and Tisha Pereira Silva.

 

Free medical camp at Varca

PANJIM: The Zuri White Sands, Goa Resort and Casino in association with Wockhardt Hospitals and Drogaria Menezes is conducting a free health check up camp on January 26 between 9 am and 12 noon at St Mary’s School Premises, next to Varca Church. Man sentenced to 4 years RI 

MARGAO: The south Goa additional district & sessions judge Vijaya D Pol on Tuesday sentenced Pundalik Bhagwant Bandari alias Aajo from Nirabag, Sanvordem, to undergo four years rigorous imprisonment (RI) 

He was further directed to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 to victim Damodar Naik and in default to undergo one year RI. The accused was found guilty of committing offence under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon) and sections 3 & 25 of the Arms Act (procession of fire arm without valid licence). He was immediately taken to Aguada jail.

The incident occurred at Madel, Mirabag on August 28, 2009, at about 3 pm, after visiting his farm at Koranguini, victim Naik, a businessman and mines engineer was returning home. On the way at Madel he was stopped by accused Bhandari and assaulted on the face causing bleeding injuries. The accused thereafter attempted to fire a shot at Naik with a pistol. The attack was foiled by Naik.

 

More time requested in bail pleas 

MARGAO: The south Goa district & sessions court will hear arguments on the bail pleas filed by Pramod Arjun Velip and Sanjay Gopal Devidas, both from Quepem on Wednesday.

The duo were arrested by Quepem police in the case of alleged rape and black mailing a married woman from Quepem after the South Goa additional district & sessions judge, Vijay Pol, on Friday, Jan 18, rejected the anticipatory bail. Earlier on Monday, Jan 21, when their applications were taken up for arguments advocate Rajiv Gomes requested for more time.

 

Man complains of scooter theft 

MARGAO: Kallappa B Kambe, resident of SRD Complex, Gogol, Margao, lodged a complaint stating that some unknown persons committed theft of his two-wheeler, Honda Aviator, GA-08-Q-3644, worth Rs 52,000, which was parked in an open place.

Kambe has stated that the theft of his bike took place between January 13 (9.30 pm) and January 14 (8 am) when the Honda Aviator was parked near WRD quarters, Gogol. After a search as he could not trace his bike, Kambe complained to the police, who registered a case under section 379 IPC.
