Dutchman hangs to death 

CALANGUTE: A 51-year-old Dutch national allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a guesthouse at Vagator on Monday. According to Anjuna Police, Fiedler Rolf was found hanging to the roof with the help of a rope at about 10 am. Police said the guesthouse owner found it suspicious as Rolf was not seen in the balcony of his room in the morning as usual and knocked on the door. On getting no response from Rolf, the owner informed the police. Anjuna Police is investigating the case.

 

Duo held for assaulting workers 

CURCHOREM: Curchorem Police arrested two persons on charges of assaulting some workers working in a flat at Bebquegal-Curchorem. According to Curchorem Police, Saurabh Madhav Barve (19) of Anandwadi-Sanvordem and Samson Alexanda Louis of Ambeudok-Sanvordem entered the flat belonging to Saiesh Malvankar from Khutiwada-Sanguem. Police further informed that the duo entered the flat by breaking the main door and damaged all the instruments and belongings and allegedly assaulted the workers working in the flat. Police said some workers got afraid and entered the toilet and bathroom and locked themselves from inside, but the accused broke open the doors and assaulted the workers. Flat owner, Malvankar, later filed a police complaint. Police booked both the accused under sections 452, 323, 504, 427 read with 34 of the IPC. They were later released on bail. Head Constable Pradeep Naik is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Siddhant Shirodkar.

 

Five-yr-old Brit saved at Patnem 

CANACONA: A five-year-old boy from England was saved by lifeguards at Patnem Beach in Canacona.

According to reports, two children were wading in the knee-deep water when Luis Rony drifted in the lateral current. The lifeguard rushed to the boy’s aid and brought him ashore safely.

 

Woman robbed of mangalsutra 

PORVORIM: Two persons snatched the mangalsutra from a woman at Sanjay Nagar, Porvorim, on Sunday.

According to Porvorim Police, Nita Mahambray of Poira-Assonora complained that the two persons on a motorcycle snatched her gold mangalsutra worth Rs 80,000 and fled. PSI V Durbhatkar is investigating.

 

HSSC seating arrangement 

CANACONA: The HSSC seating arrangement for Canacona Centre at Government HSS, Mastimoll-Canacona, has been announced. The seating arrangement is Arts (Whole 50593 – 50713 and Exemption 50714 – 50724), Commerce (Whole 50725 – 50810 and Exemption 50811 – 50816), Science (Whole 50817 – 50888 and Exemption 50889 – 50895) and Vocational (Whole 50896 – 50937 and Exemption – Nil).

 

Rajasthani folk dance workshop

PANJIM:  To promote and preserve cultural traditions of India, the Directorate of Art & Culture in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur will organise a Rajasthani "Folk Dance and Folk Music Workshop" for Goan youth from March 5 to 10, at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim, from 2 pm to 5:30 pm. 

Training in Rajasthan folk dances ~ Chari, Ghumar and Rajasthani folk music with folk instruments ~ Khadtal, Dholak, Kamaycha and Harmonium will be imparted.

Those interested are requested to submit the application forms available in the department at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panjim before March 4. 

 

Art exhibition in city

PANJIM: The Directorate of Art & Culture will organise an art exhibition & workshop by German artist Wilhelm Bronner from February 19 to 23, at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto-Panjim.

It is organized to create a space for a spirited engagement with contemporary artists of Goa. Bronner will showcase the Garden of Malabar in his exhibition on the above dates and an art meditation workshop on February 23, from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, at Sanskruti Bhavan. 

This will give an opportunity to the local artist to interact with the artist and exchange their views and ideas.

All art lovers are invited for the inaugural function at 5pm, at the Sanskruti Bhavan art gallery. Vamona Navelkar will be the chief guest. Those willing to participate in the art meditation workshop to be held the multipurpose hall of Sanskruti Bhavan, are requested to be present at 3 pm.

 

Programme on Naturopathy

PANJIM: Fr. M. Britto Joseph S J will organise “Healing the Heart and Arteries With Naturopathy”, a one-day programme for the general public on February 24, at Institute Piedade, Panjim, from 9.15 am  to 4.30 pm.

 

Mass for toddy tappers

PANJIM: The traditional annual Mass for toddy tappers in honour of their Patron, St Francis Xavier will be held at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa, on February 24, at 11 am. 

The main celebrant will be Fr Santiago Fernandes.

Gaspar Afonso, President of All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association has requested toddy tappers and their families to assemble at Old Goa by 10:30 am.

 

Chowgule College to host ‘Oberon Trio’ 

PANJIM:  Chowgule College will host Oberon Trio, from Berlin, Germany on February 20, at 5pm at its Auditorium. 

The Oberon Trio comprises western classical musicians ~ Henja Sennler (violin), Antoaneta Emanuilova (cello) and Jonathan Aner (piano).  

After a successful tour around the globe including Germany, Italy, Israel, Egypt and others, the musical crew will be showcasing their talent to the Goan audience. 

The musicians gained valuable insight into music making through their studies, and also through collaborations with world famous composers such as Benjamin Yusupov and Jörg Widmann. 

 

Selvy bags best comedian award

PANJIM: The Good Shepherd Organisation, Fatorda awarded the best comedian award to Mathew Correia (Comedian Selvy) for the year 2012. 

The award was presented by Annie Quadros at a function. Recently, Mathew, who hails from Khursohobhat-Velim, was awarded the best comedian award at the first Goa Konkani Film Festival and was also declared Yuva Srujan Puraskar 2011-12 awardee for tiatr. 

 

Fancy dress contest held

PANJIM: On the occasion of the annual Mater Dei Carnival Fiesta, a fancy dress contest was held at Mater Dei Institution, Saligao, recently. 

In the senior category, Nishita Das and Nicole Cunha Gomes (Flamenco Dancers) won the first prize, Parvati Dapprich (A Neurosurgeon Advertising Goan Brains) stood second and Kevin D’Souza (Pirate) secured the third prize. 

In the junior category, Ojasvi Lanjekar (Butterfly), Shravan and Shardul Kulkarni (Akbar and Birbal) and Oriana Fernandes (Sunflower) bagged the first three prizes.

 

Arrears clearing month

PANJIM: The Electricity Department has declared the month of March as ‘arrears clearance month’ for clearing of power dues by customers. 

Consumers are requested to clear outstanding dues during the said period, failing which their installations will be liable for disconnection.

 

Restricted water supply

PANJIM: Due to urgent maintenance work on the 700mm DI conveying main at Guirim, there will be restricted water to Bardez taluka on February 19. Consumers are requested to bear the inconvenience caused.

 

Seminar on IT career guidance 

PANJIM: Bhalchandra Technology (BT) acts as a motivating factor in building careers for students and recently, Student Islamic Organization (SIO), Thivim Unit, organised a seminar to create awareness regarding career options in the IT field at Islamic Centre Goa (ICG).

The seminar on career guidance was presented by Sagun Salgaonkar (HOD IT BT), Robert Coelho (Web Designer) along with Lowell Nazare (System Administrator DMC College) and Ankit Kaskar (Faculty BT) in the presence of Mohammed Anis & BT Director Nikhil Malgi. 

The institute acts as a helping hand in moulding the future of students. It provides ample opportunities to students to improve their skills and enhance their knowledge, so that they can accomplish their goals in life. BT encourages students and will continue its services.

BT provides computer-based seminars to over 20 higher secondary schools and colleges annually. It conducts seminars and programs with an aim to promote and expand knowledge of IT information and skills among students. 

 

Popular Tiatr Fest opens

PANJIM: The fourth Popular Tiatr Festival organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa was inaugurated recently by tiatrist Sabina Fernandes, at the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

Prince Jacob, President of Tiatr Academy, Joe Rose, Vice President and Victor de Sa, Member Secretary were present. 

On the inaugural day, ‘Tumchinch Bhurguim’, by Menino De Bandar was staged. Around nine tiatrs by well known writers and directors will be staged at the fest which will conclude on March 7.The tiatrs  include Comedian Agostinho’s ‘Hoi Ani Nam’ on February 20, ‘Hi Vatt Khuim Veta’ by Mario Menezes on February 25, ‘Zoim Pritimog Vosta’ by Comedian Domnic on February 26, ‘Tum Roddttolo’ by Milagres Gonsalves on February 27 and ‘Ranvotti’ by John D Silva on February 28. The other three tiatrs ~ ‘Match fixing’ by Pascoal Rodrigues, ‘Tum Asli Zalear’ by Jack Rodson and ‘Tsunami’ by Oldrin will be staged from March 5 to 7 at 3:30 pm. The awards presentation ceremony will be held on March 9, at the conference hall of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao at 4pm. 

The tiatrs will be judged by a three-judge panel of Fr Bernardo Cota, Domnic D’Costa and Reginaldo Rodrigues. Tickets are priced at Rs 40 and are available at the Ravindra Bhavan. 

 

Free legal aid cell

PANJIM: V M Salgaocar College of Law conducted a free legal aid cell on Sunday at the Government Middle School, Dabolim. Adv Sonia Redkar was the main speaker at the programme, which was attended by Prof Sandhya Ram (Cell Prof in-charge) and Maria (teacher of Government Middle School, Dabolim). 

 

Blood donation camp held in city

PANJIM: Lions Club of Mala Fontainhas Panjim in association with Don Bosco College, Panjim organised a voluntary blood donation camp, in the college hall. 

Don Bosco students along with teaching staff and Mala Lions Club members donated blood.  Around fifty-five units of blood were collected by the Blood Bank team of GMC led by Dr Claire D’Mello along with Shashikant Bhonsle, Gajanan Marshelkar and Dhanashree Shirodkar. Chief guest Marie Raj, Principal of Don Bosco College stated that the college was committed to its social obligation and called upon the students to donate blood. Prominent Lions present on the occasion were President Vipin Makwana Secretary Barnabe Sapeco, James Vas, Maruthi Kamu, Sunder Kerkar, T Kumar, Suhas Nirlicar, Shyamsunder Kerkar, Vinaykumar Usgaonkar and former chairperson of women’s commission Ezilda Sapeco. Joyce Manlur coordinated the programme.

Pickpocket nabbed

MARGAO: Commuters and passers-by nabbed an alleged pickpocket at the Margao KTC bus stand on Monday noon.

The alleged accused was nabbed and given a sound thrashing before being handed over to the Margao police. Sources in the know said the irate crowd recovered currency notes from his possession and it was decided not to hand over the money to the police, but to give it to a religious body.

The crowd pointed out that a number of pick pocketing incidents have taken place near the KTC bus stand in recent times, but the police had failed to keep the miscreants at bay.

They have demanded police patrolling of the KTC bus stand area to deter miscreants from targeting innocent people.

 

Plea against illegal biz  

MARGAO: The South Goa (6-seater) Operators Association has demanded immediate action against the illegal plying of commercial vehicles such as taxis, motorcycle pilots and rickshaws from the Margao railway station.

In a representation to the Inspector of Transport (Enforcement), Association President Francis D’Silva said there are many vehicles which do not have the permit to ply from the Margao railway station. He reminded the RTO officials that plying without permit is a violation of the condition and demanded a stop to the activity with immediate effect. He pointed out that the Association had drawn attention of the RTO at the railway station on February 15, but the officials preferred to overlook the same.
