Shirgao Zatra today
BICHOLIM: Thousands of devotees from in and around the State are expected to attend the five-day festival of Goddess Lairai at Shirgao on May 4. The festival is also popular for the unusual tradition of the Dhonds (special devotees of Goddess Lairai), who walk on the embers at night.
The Dhonds begin their ritualistic practice five days before the festival and leave their homes during this time and stay either in a temple or a place close to the river. Most Dhonds who walk on the embers are those who have inherited the practice from their ancestors. Some willingly become Dhonds and others do so as thanksgiving to Goddess Lairai on recovery from some illness.
On the day of the festival, the Dhonds will take a dip in the ‘Dhondhachi Tali’ (lake for the Dhonds) at Shirgao, before participating in the unusual tradition of walking on embers, a ceremony known as ‘Agnidivya.’
Legend has it that Lairai of Shirgao is one of seven sisters, the others being Morjai of Morji, Kelbai of Mulgao, Mahamaya of Maye, Mirabai (or Milagres) of Mapusa, Ajadipa of Anjadiv and Shitala of Patala. They along with their lone brother Khetoba of Vaingan, came from the Ghats and settled in different parts of Goa.  The Lairai temple and its surroundings have been illuminated and decorated.
