Another project and opposition has sprung up as if on cue. The IT Park which is meant to help generate jobs in the state for local IT graduates has generated opposition. Tony Fernandes, Congress MLA, Santa Cruz and Rohan Khaunte IT Minister present their view points for a project that could possibly boost the IT industry in the state and generate jobs.

HERALD:  Is local opposition justifiable?

Tony: See, locals have some valid reasons to oppose the project like the issue of employment, biodiversity etc. Yesterday Minister Rohan Khaunte made presentation on the entire project. He said that of the total eight buildings that would come up at the site, three would be built by the government for Start-up hub, IT hub and Technology hub. A balance of 19 acres land would be developed for utility purpose. Though, I was satisfied with the presentation, I have requested him to present the same to the Chimblamanch who are opposing it. They need to know and get satisfied.I will stand by the people and the stakeholders in their decision. I will also discuss with CLP and see what their stand is. Minister will be making presentation to all 38 MLAs on January 11.

HERALD: What is the issue of biodiversity destruction? And has the presentation put light on it?

Tony: The manch is saying that the project will lead to destruction of greenery, biodiversity and the lake, which is 400 meters away from the proposed site. See, ultimately, the locals will be the sufferers, in case there are any negative impact of the project is there. So, we have to understand their point and take a call. If they are firm that the project is detrimental for them; then I feel, government should not go ahead with it.

HERALD: Is it true that the project has only negative side and nothing positive to showcase?

Tony:  The total area acquired is 4.5 lakhs. For the project there would be destruction of trees, greenery, the lake which is 400 meters away, may get polluted or dry out, employment to locals is a question. These are all issues which the locals have raised and government will have to satisfy them on this.

HERALD:  Is it true that the project has only negative side and nothing positive to showcase?

Rohan:  Since Goa is being looked as IT destination, there have been several talks. IT companies have already started showing their interest in Goa looking at the promising policy we have offered. We have many IT graduates who are looking for jobs and we don’t want them to go out of Goa. To set up IT firm, we need area. Porvorim 3 acres and Chimbel 11-12 acres land will be developed.

We have given detail presentation along with the white paper to the Sarpanch, ZP members and MLA Tony Fernandes on the project. Last three-four months, people are using media for their own TRP ratings. IT park is requirement of the day and we will go ahead with it.

HERALD:  Is local opposition justifiable?

Rohan:  Many non-entity people are trying to be entity in the name of IT park. We will soon be issuing press statement inviting all those, who have objection or opposition, but has made no representation to government on what exactly it is, will be given an opportunity to ensure that clear picture of the project is given. From the consultation I had with the MLA, Sarpanch, I have realised that there are lot of misconception or misleading information being spread about the project creating unwarranted fear and panic. Personal attack on me is unwarranted and uncalled as it is a government project for the people of Goa. And we are clear that we will create Goa as one of the best destination for IT in the world.

HERALD: What is the issue of biodiversity destruction? And has the presentation put light on it?

Rohan: We will put light on each and every aspect through our presentation to everyone who wants to know about the project. Those who are making noise in the name of environment, lake, etc, everything is been cleared in the presentation. Lake is almost 400 meters distance from the project.  Opponents are misleading the public
