For Pilgao, Bicholim locals, their cries have fallen on deaf ears. For years, they have placed their demand to the government but to no avail.  They have called for shifting of the ferry ramp, plying from Sarmanas to Tonka in Marcel.

It is to be noted that many locals who travel to Ponda, Banastarim, Marcel and other areas use the ferry point from Sarmanas jetty, located in Pilgao panchayat to the Marcel jetty.   However, the ferry boats face problems, mainly due to the shallow waters on the Tonka side.

“During low tide, the ferry boats cannot take too much of a load. This is why, many passengers are kept waiting on one side for hours together,” said Durgadas Garde.

Locals face hardships when one of the two ferries breakdown.

While the Amona- Marcel bridge has offered respite to a section of the regular commuters, the same has not proved to be convenient for residents of Pilgao, Narve and other areas as they have to take a long detour.

It may be recalled that recently, the ferry ramp from Tonka side was repaired after the ferry boats were diverted towards Amona. However, the ramp on the Sarmanas side has developed some cracks which are visible during the low tide. This has made it difficult for commuters to get their cars onto the ferry boats.

Sources said the delay for shifting the ramp is  due to problems with acquiring land.
