Kashinath Shetye worked against the govt under its nose, says Cabral, even as he tells SURAJ NANDREKAR about the details of these cases

HERALD: What made you move the privilege motion against activist Kashinath Shetye?

Nilesh Cabral: There is a secrecy of operation and privilege of an MLA. Kashinath claims to be an activist and people on social platform praise him. But his activism is not defined to particular subject. His activism is like extortion like he is into anything and everything.

HERALD: But in democracy anyone is free and can raise questions and move courts isn’t it?

Cabral: Yes, I am not negating this. But as an MLA, I have certain privileges. The point was,  how could he put the question I had asked and not even tabled in the House on social media. The question had not even reached the members? If the Legislative Secretary is so open to everybody it is a serious issue. As an MLA I can ask any question regarding  anybody. On the other hand, he is a government servant.

HERALD: But he says his leave for appearing in court was approved.

Cabral:  How it is possible for him to travel from Xeldem (Shetye’s place of posting) to appear in different courts/forums? Most of the leaves are half-day. So, when was he on duty? There are also some leave applications wherein he has taken continuous 18-19 days holiday in one month. He seems to be having a free run at the cost of the government. I can understand if a person files one-two-three cases but he has been filing a number of petitions in different courts. What is his contribution towards his work in the government department then?

HERALD: Were you upset because he has been targeting GTDC of late?

Cabral: I have nothing against anybody. GTDC is not my property it belongs to the government, chairmen will come and go. But the core issue here is being a government servant, how does he get time to do all this.

HERALD:We understand he had filed cases against leasing of GTDC properties. Your view?

Cabral:  After taking over as GTDC chairman, I know how much I had to strive to bring the corporation into profit which was at one time in the red. Secondly, he filed cases against properties leasing but my conscience is clear and everything is transparent. I don’t have anything to hide and I have said I am open to inquiry. But ask Shetye what he had against the wine festivals he has been going to courts against that too. What is his problem? The GTDC is trying hard to get more tourists and he is bent on working against it.
