SAG Executive Director VM Prabhudesai has set his sight on March 30, 2019 as the State is working tirelessly and relentlessly to host the ambitious endeavor.
‘We are preparing in a manner that the Games will be held in April. That is our commitment and we are going in that direction,” stated the Executive director.
“We have floated all tenders for sports equipment, transportation etc. The concerned committees are planning for the opening and closing ceremony beside that the Games launching ceremony, which will be held in January,” Prabhudesai added.
He further explained that key tenders of sports equipment purchases and athletes accommodation arrangements, the major concern areas of IOA as far as conduct of Games are concerned is already put to public notice, besides, selection of brand building agencies like Public Relations Agency and Design Agency being forwarded to Government for acceptance.
While the 34th Nat Games were postponed six times before they were finally held on Feb12, 2011 in Jharkhand, Guwahati took five years to complete the infrastructure to finally hold the games in 2007.
It can be recollected that the Games were postponed for five-times in two years in Jharkhand citing the assembly elections in 2009 before they were hosted in 2011. A similar situation could also arise in Goa with the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections, though the dates for the same are not announced yet.
However, Prabhudesai stated that this factor wouldn’t affect the functioning of the games and the decision about the same is solely with the government.
“The elections have nothing to do with us. We don’t want to comment on this as elections are not done by us. We are working toward the completion of the venues and we are confident that we shall complete the stadiums and have the required infrastructure ready in the next three months,” said a confident SAG Executive Director VM Prabhudesai.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity an election commissioner also repeated that the decision of the postponement of the games lies with the government and the games and elections are two different aspects.
In can be noted that Goa was supposed to host the Games in 2016, but due to unpreparedness, the Games had to be delayed and later postponed.
When asked whether if the election dates if announced during the games time would have an impact on the Games, Prabhudesai said that it would be Government’s decision to take a call on this issue.
Herald had earlier questioned SAG ED VM Prabhudessai on this issue wherein the chief had mentioned that they had written to authority concerned regarding the same issue.
It has been learnt that eleven departments are directly involved in the conduct of the Games like the Sports Authority of Goa, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Goa Tourism and its corporation, Health Department to name a few.
