‘We are consistent in our battle against drug menace’

VIBHA VERMA met DGP Muktesh Chander who has declared ‘war on drugs’

Director-General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander has declared ‘war on drugs’ and has sent a strong message that he will not spare even police personnel/officers failing to act against the menace or if found to be hand-in-gloves with the drug traders.

Herald: What is the strategy planned to curb the illegal activities in the coastal areas like Anjuna where drugs are easily available in parties?

Chander: Our strategy is very clear ‘war on drugs’, however, I cannot disclose everything on the plan of action. Either the respective police teams and specialized units go after the drug menace or I go after the police officials who fail to act. If there is no action taken against the drug-related activities and the peddlers, I will take strict action against the police in-charge. And if there is a nexus between the police and drug traders, I will dismiss him/her from the job. No suspension, no departmental inquiry, direct dismissal from service under section 311 of the Indian Constitution.

Herald:What is your take on the easy availability of drugs in most of the night music parties?

Chander: We are doing our work with sincerity. We also need cooperation from the public. People must come forward and report the matter to us. I assure that action will be taken. They can reach out to us through calls or messages. We will not disclose their identity and reward them suitably.

Herald: What are the changes in the system and functioning of Goa Police in order to eradicate drugs in Goa?

Chander: Lots of work needs to be done like training them and introspect as to why there are so many acquittals. We also need to strengthen the intelligence gathering.
