MAPUSA: Assonora United Sports Club managed to hold Pilerne Sports Club to a 2-2 draw in the GFA’s 2nd Division League played at Duler Stadium, here, on Wednesday.
In a well contested match, both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of first half with Pilerne opening the scoring in the 15th minute.
Royston clever pass found Craig Menezes who unselfishly laid the ball to a better positioned Anson D’Souza who made no mistake in dispatching his shot into the net to give the lead.
Assonora did waste time in getting back on terms when Brijesh Kankonkar’s sizzling shot from just outside the box nestled into the net in the 26th minute.
Both the team kept creating opening but the attacks fizzled out once inside the danger box of each side.
Pilerne’s Russel Fernandes was unlucky when in the 31st minute his long range shot just missed the target by a whisker.
Crossing over, Craig Menezes put Pilerne ahead once again in the 50th minute with a low grounder after being set up by Royston with a long ball.
But their joy was short-lived as Assonora found the equaliser through a cracking free-kick taken by Dikshav Sarif which had no answer from the Pilerne keeper.
Assonora keeper Chandan then brought up a smart stop in the 59th minute to deny Anson D’Souza’s shot from entering the net.
While at the other end, the Pilerne keeper Agnelo Fernandes kept out Brijesh Kankonkar from getting past him in a one-to-one situation.
Both teams had two golden chances of wrapping up full three points, first in the 85th minute Pilerne’s Anson with only the keeper at his mercy shot wide of the target while Assnora’s Dikshav direct free-kick kissed the Pilerne post and came back into play.
Meanwhile, at Poriat ground, St. Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna managed to edge past Sinquerim Sports Club 2-1.
The Marna players scored a goal in each session of play through Siddant Shirodkar (39th min) and Sangam Pednekar (92nd min), while Sinquerim players managed to pull a goal back in the 79th minute through Mandar who scored from the penalty spot.
