Calangute Assn scrape past Panjim Footballers

MAPUSA: Calangute Association Sports Club managed to scrape past Panjim Footballers by 3-2 margin in the Goa Professional League played at Duler stadium here on Tuesday.

After Tuesday's win, Calangute Association are on 17 points while Panjim Footballers stay on 10 points.

The Beachside lads encashed on the poor defending from the Capital side and saw U-20 Siddhant Shirodkar net a brace.

In the ninth minute, defender Janio Fernandes fumbled in his clearance to find Siddhant Shirodkar snatch the ball and scored with a neat placement to give his side the lead.

Just three minutes later, Calangute made it 2-0. A long ball by Nickson Castanha found unmarked Kouame Junior on the right flank whose low cross was spilled by keeper Preston Rego and the ball travelled to Siddhant Shirodkar who coolly guided the ball home.

A well combined move initiated by Siddhant and Kouame Junior saw the latter float the ball to Siddhant who had just keeper Preston to beat but shot weakly at the keeper's direction missing his hat-trick.

In the 27th minute, Kouame Junior almost netted the third goal but his strike from close was blocked by defender Janio Fernandes.

Capital side had their first attempt at the goal only in the 34th minute where a 25-yard shot by Vallmiky Miranda was comfortably collected by keeper Paramveer Singh.

Minutes later, a curling shot by Lloyd Cardozo was blocked by keeper Paramveer and cleared for a corner by Krishnanath before Vallmiky could finish.

Finally, Capital side managed to reduce the margin in the 43rd minute, where unmarked Lloyd Cardozo collected a through pass from Krishna Gawas, darted inside the penalty box and beat the helpless keeper Paramveer with a neat grounder to make it 2-1.

Just three minutes into the second session, Capital side levelled terms a free-kick by Liston Cardozo was not cleared by Calangute defender which found U-20 Pandurang Gauns who fired the ball into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-2.

Calangute did not wait for long to once again take the lead where Sidharth Kundaikar brilliantly curled his strike from just inside the penalty box into the top corner of the goal to make it 3-2.

At the other end, a deadly cross by Lloyd saw Joyson Gauncar touch of the ball hit rival defender and rebound of the upright.

Two delightful crosses by substitute Daryl Costa saw Kouame Junior miss a sitter while Siddhant’s strike was blocked by keeper Preston, once again missing his hat-trick.

In the 77th minute, the Beachside were reduced to ten men with the sending off defender Jirjar Terang by referee Prasad Surlakar for second booking offense after he had pushed Joyson Gauncar.

It was almost curtains down for Capital side but Daryl Costa missed a glorious chance from close.
