Allwyn’s solo strike hands his side their first three points
MAPUSA: Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim edged past Churchill Brothers 1-0 in the Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday.
Cavelossim started the match on an attacking note as they were the first to look at the goal when their skipper Asley Araujo curled goal-bound corner almost entered the goal but Churchill keeper Ricardo Cardozo came up with a brilliant save to deny the midfielder.
Two minutes later, Churchill also came up with the first shot when Alber Gonsalves cut past two defenders to enter the box and sent a stiff grounder but it missed the target by few inches.
Though it was Churchill who dictated the most of the session, Cavelossim stunned them with an opening goal in the added time of the first half when Allwyn’s smart header found the net off Richard Fernandes long-distance free-kick.
Unlike the first session, Churchill started the second half offensively and created many chances within first 15 minutes. In one of these, Janak Kudmal’s fine free-kick found Alber in the box but the midfielder failed to direct his header in the goal.
Meanwhile, Cavelossim also came close to double their lead when Samson dribbled past few defenders in his drifting run from the halfway line but his sparkling shot was brilliantly blocked by Churchill keeper Ricardo. A few minutes later the frontman had another chance but this time he failed to keep his shot on target as the ball just went wide.
In the next minute, Samson was in the action again when he tried to find Mathew Colaco with a fine cross from the right but Churchill’s experienced defender Rahul Kumar cleared it for a corner.
Cavelossim were reduced to 10 men in the added time of the match as their U-20 Cayven Araujo was sent off for a rough tackle on Israil Gurung, while the Churchill midfielder was also booked for decency.
Though Churchill tried hard to find the equaliser in the second half, Cavelossim defender never gave a chance to I-League side to break their last line as the match ended up in the favour of Cavelossim.
