Nilesh Velip scored the solitary goal to take the hosts into the semi-finals

MARGAO: Host Cuncolim Union overcame spirited CRC Chinchinim 1-0 to storm into the semi-finals of South Goa Mc Dowell's No.1 Yarri Premiere Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Government village school playground, Cuncolim, on Saturday.

There was no score at half time.

It was an encounter that turned out to be one that both the teams would like to forget. If CRC, Chinchinim midfield was lethargic, Cuncolim Union's strike force was woefull.

Backed by the home crowd, Cuncolim Union showed the ascendancy and conjured three scoring opportunities but first CRC Goalkeeper Raison D'Souza  comfortably collected  veteran striker Rosario Carvalho than came a timley save from rival defender to thwart Nilesh Velip's snap shot .

At the other end, CRC Chinchinim responded with a series of raids.

John Fernandes received the ball from Lerino Fernandes and the former shot from a tight angle and failed to beat the rival goalkeeper Shaikh.

Later, Lerino Fernandes who sped past the rival defender and unleashed a stiff shot was well blocked by Cuncolim Union goalkeeper Shaikh. With time ticking out, for lemon break, Cuncolim Union came roaring but veteran striker Rosario Carvalho muffed sitter with only rival goalkeeper to beat.

The second session lacked the intensity, with both the teams were guilty of miss passes. Infact CRC's John Fernandes should have scored but rival goalkeeper made a stupendous save to block him from scoring.

Soon after resumption, CRC's Sunny Simoes lifted the ball above the on rushing rival goalkeeper only to miss by few inches.

The all-important goal was scored in the 38th minute when Veteran striker Rosario Carvalho floated the ball inside the rival penalty box and Nilesh Velip made no mistake in nodding the ball home to bring loud applause from Cuncolim supporters.

Stunned by the goal, CRC Chinchinim went all out in serach of equaliser and fired sorties however rival defender were alert in protecting the slender lead. Cuncolim Union had couple of scoring opportunities to inflate their tally but Nilesh Velip and Rosario Carvalho squandered an easy chances.

CRC Chinchinim tried hard to level terms with their counterparts and were successful in creating chances at the fag end however their strikers John Fernandes and Sunny Simoes wasted  goal scoring opportunities.

Cuncolim Union will now meet United Club of Palolem in the second semi final on August 14.
