MAPUSA: Dempo SC registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Calangute Association SC in the GFA's Goa Super League at Duler stadium here, Saturday.

The all-important goal came in the 14th minute through Gourav Kankonkar.

It was a sweet revenge for Dempos who were defeated by Calangute Association 0-3 in the GPL.

After today’s win Dempo has 26 points, while Calangute Association stays on 19.

Calangute had two early attempts at the rival goal. Under-20 Nigel Silveira's left footer travelled just past the goal post while Joywin Carneiro fierce strike was saved by Dempo's goalkeeper Antonio Da Silva.

The Golden Eagles, after some early probing, scored what ultimately turned out to be the match-winner in the 14th minute. Under-20 Necio Fernandes' corner was headed by Mohammed Ali in Gourav Kankonkar's direction and the last named beat Calangute's custodian Presley Mascarenhas.

Dempo's Darell Mascarenhas could have doubled their lead in the 27th minute as he received a pass from Jaison Vaz, but saw his placement missing the target narrowly.

At the other end, a scorching left footer by Junior Carret sailed past the Dempo’s goalpost.

Another glorious chance for Golden Eagles went in vain as a 25-yard rasping strike by Necio Fernandes saw Calangute's custodian Presley bringing off a brilliant full- stretched diving save.

On resumption, in the 53rd minute, a costly error between Joywin and goalkeeper Presley would have cost Calangute a goal, but Under-20 Vieri Colaco's placement rebounded off the post. Minutes later Shallum Pires' free-kick was controlled by Jaison and squared to Necio Fernandes, whose weak effort was saved by Presley.

Calangute's golden opportunity to level terms came in the 61st minute from a fine build up initiated by Junior Carret and Pratesh Shirodkar. The last named essayed to unmarked Under-20 Jovito Fernandes, who had all the time in the world to score, but he shot straight in the direction of Dempo's goalkeeper Antonio

In the added time, Dempo custodian Antonio came to his team's rescue as he effected a breath-taking diving save and prevented Saeesh Halankar's placement from entering the goal after Richard Cardoz had done the spadework.

Dempo's Gourav Kankonkar received the man-of-the match award from Alirio Lobo.

Yesterday, at Nagoa ground, Verna; Vasco beat Panjim Footballers 2-0 with Khrawkuper Tamu (43rd) and Savlon Fernandes (90+5) being the scorers in a GPL match.
