FIFA delegates inspect Nehru Stadium, Fatorda

PANJIM: The FIFA core team and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) inspected the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Thursday as part of their inspection tour of the five shortlisted venues for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020.

The Inspection team comprised of Oliver and Nicholas and Roma Khanna, Tournament Director LOC FIFA U-17 World Cup.

In a bid to successfully host the second FIFA event in the country in three years, the AIFF had shortlisted five venues namely Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Goa, wherein they have now inspected the last two States.

According to the sources, the visiting team inspected the entire Nehru Stadium and looked happy with the Stadium infrastructure. “They were very happy with the Stadium infrastructure and pointed out only at the pitch, which wasn’t green. They also spoke regarding security arrangements,” said the source stating that they have ample of time in getting that sorted before the Cup.

“There was a collective responsibility and excellent collaborative effort which made it a huge success during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 and they would live to have the best U-17 Women’s World Cup in the State”, said the FIFA officials.

The source also revealed that the FIFA weren’t happy with the Stadium in Ahmedabad as ‘they had virtually nothing much to show.’

When contacted SAG Executive Director VM Prabhudessai said, “Last time (for U-17 World Cup 2017) they gave a list of 560 compliances which we completed. The Women’s World Cup will be a huge success with the Government’s support,”  “All compliances of FIFA will be adhered to their satisfactions,” concluded Prabhudesai. As of now, Germany, Spain and Netherland are the three teams which qualified for the cup along with host nation -- India. The tournament which features 16 teams will be potted in four Groups who will battle out at four venues across the country.

Chief Engineer Ringle, Mahesh Rivonkar, GFA Vice President Lavinio Rebello, Francisco Nunes executive committee member and Acting Secretary Jovito Lopes were present for the inspection.
