FM Ethan, FM Saurabh, IM Ritviz, IM Nitesh, Arpith, FM Joydeep and FM Apoorv in joint lead

PANJIM: At the end of the 5th Round of the Unity Club aRating Chess Tournament 2024, FM Ethan Vaz (2268) awitating Sharsha Backer (1977) and Aayush Shirodkar(1720) in the 4th round. The 5th round saw upset loss of the top seed GM Venkatesh M R (2397), PSPB by Arpith Bijoy (2087) of Kerala. 

In another upset in the 4th round, Vivaan Ballikar outwitted GM Roy Chowdhury Saptarshi (2358) of Railways. IM Sammed Shetye lost to FM Apoorv Kamble in the 4th round, while IM Nitish Belurkar (2265) of Goa got the better of Statemate Mandar Lad. 

IM Audi Ameya (2208) lost to FM Saurabh Khherdekar(1917) of Maharashtra. FM Joydeep Dutta of West Bengal got the better of Vishwesh Kochrekar(1794) of Maharashtra. IM Ritviz Parab of Goa beat AGM Prashanth Naik(1811) of Maharashtra. The tournament is organised by Unity Club in association with Salcete Taluka Chess Association under the aegis of Goa Chess Association and All India Chess Federation. The tournament has drawn 304 players from all over the country out of which 147 are rated players including 2 GMs, 4 IMs, and 3 FMs.

Earlier in the day, chief guest Sagun Velip, Director, Directorate of Art and Culture of Goa, inaugurated the event in the presence of Manthan Adpaikar, Ashesh Keni, Secretary Goa Chess Association, Damodar Zambaulikar, Vice-President, Salcete Taluka Chess Association, Pradeep Gaonkar, President Unity Club, Prashant Naik and other dignitaries. 

A total cash prize of Rs 2.51 lakh and trophies will be distributed to the winners. The games are being played in Rapid format under the aegis of Goa Chess Association and All India Chess Federation as per FIDE rules.
