PANJIM: Former football great George Candido Abreu passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday afternoon.

PANJIM: Former football great George Candido Abreu passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday afternoon.

Goa Football Association condoled the death of George Candido Abreu. GFA President Elvis Gomes said that Candido started his career with São Miguel de Taleigao and later played for Salgaocar’s till retirement. He was the member of the first Santosh trophy squad. He is Survived by his 5 daughters.

Brahmanand Sankhawalkar expressed, “When I saw him in his glory days, he was very committed and aggressive defender on the  field, but off the field, he was a humble and down to earth person.” 

Meanwhile, Sporting Clube de Goa President Peter Vaz also expressed his grief, “Saddened by the passing away of Candido. An stalwart of the old guard of Goan Footballers, he played much before my time. But I have read and heard about him. My condolences his bereaved family.”
