GOAN FC CROWNED PRO LEAGUE CHAMPS
Beat Dempo SC 2-0 in season finale to clinch title
PANJIM: Goan Football Club (FC Goa Development Squad) outplayed Dempo Sports Club 2-0 to win the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League title in the final league match played at Dempo Academy ground, Ella-Old Goa, on Monday.
Goan FC finished the table with 54 points from 22 outings. Hayden Fernandes and Lalawmpuia scored for the winners as both goals were scored in the first session.
Riding on the fan support, Goan FC took control of the game and once again came close to scoring but Lalawmpuia’s long range effort hit the cross bar.
Goan FC took the lead in the 23rd minute when Hayden took 30-yard shot which had no answer from the keeper. Dempo SC needed a win to the title, but Goan FC were all prepared to fight for the three points.
In the 38th minute, Goan FC doubled the account to make the matters safe when Dempo SC’s last defender Edwin gave a wrong pass to Goan FC’s Liston who played it across to Lalawmpuia for the team's second goal. In the second half, Dempo SC started brightly and came close to scoring when Floyd tried his luck from the box, but the rival keeper saved it. In the 59th minute, Goan FC were reduced to 10 men when Savior Gama was sent off for his reckless tackle on Kritikesh. However, despite being a man down, Goan FC managed to hold on to the scoreline and also record a clean sheet with a 2-0 win.
Meanwhile, at Duler Stadium, Sporting Clube de Goa scored a 2-1 win over Churchill Brothers SC to finish third in the league. Sporting Clube finished their campaign with 47 points, one ahead of Salgaocar FC who finished fourth with 46 points. Churchill Brothers finished fifth with 39 points.
Marcus Mascarenhas scored a brace for the winning side while Uttam Rai pulled a goal back for the losing team.
Meanwhile the GFA President Churchill Alemao congratulated the winners saying," With the new title, Goan FC has added another feather in their cap. The team's dedication, enthusiasm and insight have been inspiring. Everyone in the team worked hard to earn the coveted title. The players , coach and support staff got what they worked for.
“The GFA is happy that the professional managment worked diligently and their commitment paid off with a clear cut victory. The final victory against a tough opponent demonstrated that Goan FC were the best," added Churchill.
GFA's senior vice-president Lavinio Rebello, Anthony Pango, vice-president, Dominic Pereira chairman of Competition Committee, John D'Silva, vice-chairman and several members of GFA'a executive committee congratulated Goan FC.
