ODISHA: Goa defeated Sikkim 2-1 in the 23rd Senior Women’s National Football Championship, at Odisha, on Monday.

In the initial moments of the match, it was Michel Castanha and Sujita Murgaonkar who did all the hard work but Goa's young striker Karishma Shirvoikar couldn't guide the ball into the nets.

Goa got two more opportunities but Valenie Fernandes' powerful shot was saved by Sikkim custodian Gurmi Tamang. Later, Nevila Colaco missed another chance after she shot directly into the keepers hands.

Sikkim found the breakthrough in the 18th minute of play through a corner kick taken by Nim Sherpa, their unmarked striker Anju Tamang slotted the ball home.

Goa regrouped and managed to equalise soon as Keeda D'Souza passed the ball to Sujita Murgaonkar who made no mistake to slam the ball into the nets past the rival keeper in the 20th minute.

Goa's defence marshalled by Cynthia  Lobo, Linda Colado, Scindia Saudantikar and Keenda D'Souza gave little chance for Sikkim's strikers to penetrate through the defence.

Cynthia Lobo created many chances with Linda Colaco pushing the midfield to get the second goal but striker Valenie Fernandes' try was saved by Sikkim Keeper.

Post half time, Goa re-grouped and had a good control over the proceedings; Michel Castanha tried her luck at the goal but the attempt was ruled out as off-side by assistant referee Shalinni Yadav.

In the 57th minute, Nevilla was replaced by Ansiva Vas. Later, Sujita Murgaonkar along with Michel combined well and sent in an inch perfect ball to Karishma Shirvoikar who shot the ball home to give Goa the well deserved lead.

Goa tried hard to score goals but Sikkim played defensively making it very difficult for Valenie Fernandes and Karishma Shirvoikar and Michel Castanha to score past the rival keeper.

Goa will now play Uttrakhand on February 7, and will look to score more goals as Goa needs 14 goals to make their place in quarter-finals.
