Goa win Nat futsal championship
Clinch boys and girls futsal titles for the third consecutive year
PANJIM: The Goa boys and girls team scripted history as they won the National Futsal Championship, organised by School Games Federation of India (SGFI) for the third consecutive time, held at Rajeev Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Jhansi, recently.
While the boys team recorded a narrow 1-0 win against Jammu and Kashmir in the final, the girls team eased their past Telangana 4-1.
In the first final, J&K put up a strong show against the defending champions and kept Goa at bay for most part of the game. However, the Goan outfit, who were undefeated throughout the tournament, showed pure class and resistance on the field and managed to score the match-winner through Velton Fernandes. Goa’s Velton was also named as the tournament’s best player for his stand out performance throughout the competition.
“The final was most challenging match of the tournament but I knew the boys could do it as they were exceptional throughout. I’m proud of my team and we hope to carry on this success as a beginning of dominance of Goa in futsal,” said coach Covan Lourenco.
In the girls final, Karishma Shirvoikar scored a brace and Quincy Rodrigues and Rizella Cia Almeida netted a goal each in Goa’s 4-1 win in the final. Karishma received the best player award in the girls’ category.
“I’m proud of both the teams as they have won the championship for the third consecutive time and I would like to congratulate them for their efforts and for making our State proud. I’m confident we shall retain the title again in the future,” said Futsal Association of Goa (FAG) President Benjamin Silva.
GFA President Churchill Alemao said, “It is a great achievement and a proud moment for Goan futsal. I congratulate both the winning teams and hope we continue to maintain the dominance of futsal across India,”
The teams were received at the railway station by FAG President Benjamin Silva, Goa Football Association President Churchill Alemao, dy. Director of Sports Gurudas Vernekar and other officials.
