MAPUSA: Goan Football Club eased past Panjim Footballers 2-0 in the Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, on Wednesday.
Goan who had defeated Corps of Signal in the last round match made few changes to their side as they tarted without most of their key players like Liston Colaco, Franzil Negredo, Aaren D’Silva and Princeton Rebello who has been sent on loan to I-League side Indian Arrows, where Lalnunsiama, Hayden Fernandes, Jason Barbosa, Brian Faria and Sezwin Fernandes replaced them in the starting XI.
Panjim Footballers, on the other hand, also made few changes to their side which held FC Bardez in their last match as Akeraj Martins, Devendra Pedenekar and Prasil Kankonkar found their names in the playing XI for the Capital city side.
After some end-to-end play, it was Panjim Footballlers who had a first chance of the match in the 7th minute when Snedden Rodrigues went for the glory from just inside the box, only to see it goes wide by hairline distance.
Goan took more ten minutes to create their first potent chance of the match when Leander setup Jonathan Cardozo in the box with a brilliant cross from the right but the midfielder failed to control his header from close as the ball went sky-high.
At the other end, Panjim Footballers should have taken lead in the 22nd minute when Akeraj made a superb run from the halfway line taking two rival defenders with him but completely failed to find the net from inside the box.
Two minutes later, Panjim keeper Gurpreet Singh made a superb save when he nicely tipped over Saviour’s tap from close off Brian’s cross.
After some probing attacks, Goans finally opened their score line in the 30th minute when Hayden’s blistering shot from the edge of the box entered the far post making it 1-0 for the Junior Gaurs.
On changing the sides, Goans added one more goal to their tally within 10 minutes when Saviour brilliantly tapped in, to Jason Barbosa’s curling cross from the left to make it 2-0 for his side.
A few minutes later, Leander wasted an easy chance to further inflate Goa’s lead when he failed to beat Panjim keeper Gurpreet in a one-on-one situation.
In the 70th minute, Goan keeper Ipotip Das was sent off following his tackle on Panjim Footballers midfielder Joston Cardoz just outside the box.
However, a man down situation did not affect the Junior Gaurs as they continued their attacking till the last minute of the match.
Substitute defender Serineo Fernandes had a chance to make it 3-0 for the Goans with his first touch but he failed to put the ball home from the goalmouth off Jason’s another curling cross.
With today’s, Goan FC moved to the 4th position with 11 points from seven matches, while Panjim Footballers continued to be at the 11th position with just six points from eight matches.
