Latesh, Kapil, Joaquim, Desmon score a goal each for Dempo SC against 10-man Panjim side

MAPUSA: Dempo Sports Club registered a thumping 4-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Professional League (GFA) match, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, here on Tuesday.

Dempo gaffer Samir Naik continued to field the same squad from the last match where they suffered a first defeat at the hands of Sporting Clube de Goa after a consecutive three win in the league.

Whereas, Domnic Soares and Micheal Dias made the first start for Panjim, while their coach Savio Vaz brought back Harshad Naik and U-20 striker Chandan Gawas in the starting XI.

Dempo started the match impressively and dictated the major part of the session where they came up with numerous attacks but superb defending from Michael and Domnic restricted the Golden Eagle from scoring.

At the other end, Panjim’s Snedden Rodrigues tried to find Clifton Fernandes in the box but Nestor Dias cleared the danger at the cost of a corner. From the resulting corner, Michael tried his luck from inside the box, only to see it go wide by few inches.

After some superb defending Panjim’s last line finally broke in the 33rd minutes as Velito Cruz found Latesh Mandrekar with a lofted pass who drilled a powerful shot from the top of the box which hit the far post before entering the goal making it 1-0 for Dempo.

Four minutes later, Dempo had a golden opportunity to double their lead when Panjim defender Kunal Kundaikar brought down Kapil Hoble who was in commanding position to score in the box. The referee Tejas Nagvenkar quickly pointed towards the penalty spot and sent off the defender with a direct red card. However, Beevan D’Mello shot wide from the spot to disappoint their supporters.

Despite having a disadvantage of having man short in the match, Panjim came up with some swift attacks on the opponents where first, Clifton saw his powerful grounder saved by Dempo keeper Agnelo Gomes. A minute later, Clifton set up Snedden in the box but the striker’s shot missed the target by a whisker.

In between these, Dempos also had another chance increase their lead when Kapil and Beevan combined well outside the box but Kapil shot on Panjim keeper Gurpreet Singh instead of putting it into the goal.

The Golden Eagles came out stronger in the second half and doubled their lead with just three minutes in the session as Kapil headed in from close off Yogesh Kadam’s short cross from the box.

In the very next minute, they had another chance to inflate their lead when Nickson Castanha curled in from the right to Beevan but the striker saw his header rebound off the crossbar.

Dempo once again tried to be dominant side and added two more goals in the last ten minutes as first, substitute Joaquim Abranches found the net from 18-yards after Panjim keeper Gurpreet denied Beevan in a one-on-one situation as the ball rolled to the striker who neatly placed the ball in the back of the nylons.

With just six more minutes to go, just-in Desmon Pereira made it 4-0 for Dempo when Joaquim made an excellent through pass to find the winger in the box with just keeper to beat. Desmon later made no mistake to beat the opponent keeper with a sparkling shot from the 10-yards.
