PANJIM: The Army Yachting Node (AYN), Mumbai is a windsurfing and sailing powerhouse. It has produced great windsurfers like four-time National champion Satteppa Kuranagi, defending champion D P Chennaiah and S Jerome Kumar. But all their skills are being put to the test by 17-year-old Goan lad Dayne Coelho, who won two out of the three races held on Saturday at the 32nd National Boardsailing championship at Dolphin Adventure Sports, Dona Paula.

That puts Dayne just one point ahead of Satteppa, but with three races to go on the last day on Sunday, it could still be anybody’s championship. Chennaiah and Jerome Kumar are some way off, but certainly not out of contention.

In the Race Youth Women’s class, Katya Coelho took a commanding lead over young Rhea Fernandes, winning all three races of the day. There were some surprises in the Raceboard Youth Men’s class, with David Estibeiro coming second in all races, while Chadwick D’Mello won one race with Raunak not competing. Russel Lobo managed to snatch one race from Myron Gomes, slightly reducing the youngster’s lead.  

In Raceboard Open Men’s class, AYN’s Manoj Kumar Kore took two races to get a wafer-thin one-point lead over Manpreet Singh. Veteran R Murughan of Trishna Sailing Club, Bangalore, is placed third, and could still spring a surprise.

In the Topper India Grand Prix, honours were once more shared evenly as Tanishq Desai of Hyderabad, Charbelle Carmo Lobo of Goa, and Aditi Sahasrabuddhe of Goa took one race each. The Goa Topper programme, held at Cidade de Goa, includes basic training, coaching and racing. It is a bid by Adventure Breaks and the Goa Yachting Association, sponsored by Cidade de Goa, to rebuild the state’s supremacy in sailing.
