RAIA: Margao Sports Club prevailed over Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado, Cuncolim, 5-4 via tie-breaker in the inaugural match of 15th Davorlim Cup organised by Sporting Club of Davorlim at panchayat ground, Davorlim, on Thursday.
In first session of play, Margao SC Elroy Barreto’s left-footer missed the target by whiskers in the 11th minute, while Melvin Fernandes of Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado ran down to beat the rival defence and shot which was well saved by Margao SC goalkeeper Karol soares in the 30th minute.
After resumption of second half, Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado changed their plans and took control of the game and Daulat Dessai was well fed by Jollyton, who beat the Margao SC defence and also goalkeeper and tap the ball into the net in 57th minute.
Margao SC regrouped quickly and tried to find the equaliser but all efforts went in vain as the Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado goalkeeper came in their way. However, the much-needed equaliser came from the corner kick. Cliff Barreto’s corner kick directly landed into the net in the dying minutes of the game.
At the end of regulation time, both teams were held to a 1-1 draw.
In resultant tie-breaker, Margao SC proved to be the better shooters as Margao SC goalkeeper Carol Soares saved two penalties.
Caitan Costa, president of Sporting Club of Davorlim presented the man-of-match award to Daulat Dessai of Santa Cruz Society of Poitomado.
