To play three pre-season games in Goa

PANJIM: Nothing is alright in Indian football. I-League and Indian Super League are in a cold war against the All India Football Federation over the supremacy in India as the top tier league.

Many accusations and demands from either side of the leagues. While one claimed to have developed Indian football, the other boasts to have brought revolutionaries in the beautiful game.

While there have been plenty of debates, one thing cannot be ignored is the Spanish influence in the Indian Super League which has offered a drastic change with attacking and offensive football which has been a treat to watch.

Last season, Five out of 10 teams had Spanish gaffers in the Indian Super League. One of the biggest revelations was the transition in the style of play under coach Sergio Lobera.

And this time around I-League and the Kolkata giants have opted to try the same formula roping in Spanish head Coach Kibu Vicuna who didn’t waste much time has he instantly signed four Spaniards of which Salva Chamorro and Fran Morante are part of the ongoing pre-season camp held at Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.

The remaining two Francisco Javier Gonzalez and latest signing Joseba Beitia will join the squad later.

“We have four players as of now which could become five. They help the team to get better tactically. The Spaniards have good understanding of the game. They are tactically better according to me,” explained Mohun Bagan coach Kibu.

“Spanish football is not always attacking football but we believe in good football. We believe in playing a good brand that excites both player and the fans. We believe tactical game,” added Kibu, who began his pre-training season in Goa on Tuesday.

India had seen series of football invasions across decades. From Nigerians, Africans to French and Brazilians, but what thrilled the fans and the nation was the Spanish football which FC Goa first dictated in India under coach Sergio followed by many others go in that direction.

“I know that ISL teams have many Spanish coaches. But every coach has different style of play. But for me it will be an offensive game but we shall also concentrate on our defence as football is a collective game,” explained Kibu.

The Mariners had unforgettable last season wherein they finished fifth but Kibu is aiming to win every game to take his side to lift the title.

“This season I am trying to get the team in good shape and definitely every team eyes for the I-League title. We will compete to claim the title this year. Mohun Bagan will fight every game,” said coach Kibu Vicuna.

FC Goa new signee Alexander Romario Jesuraj who has joined Mohun Bagan on loan attended the training session on Wednesday.

Mohun Bagan will be playing three friendly matches in Goa during their 10-day pre-season tour ahead of their domestic league which begins at the end of this month. The Mariners will take on Salgaocar FC on July 13 and Sesa FA on July 14. The Kolkata side finish their campaign against Calangute Association on July 18. All matches will be played at Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, at 8.30 a.m.
