SIRLIM: Navelim Villagers Union made a good start to their defence as they edged out Mormugao United Sports and Cultural Club 7-6 via the tie-breaker after sharing four goals in regulation time in 24th All Goa Our Lady of Merces inter-village football tournament inaugural at Chinchinim church ground, Monday. The teams shared four goals at full time.

Mark Gomes (Navelim) and Sidney Lucas (Mormugao) netted a brace each for their respective teams.Incessant rain failed to dampen the spirits of the fans who turned up in large numbers for the opening game.

Mark Gomes netted the first goal of tournament off an accurate pass from Nevin Pereira. Jaison Vaz had an opportunity to draw level for Mormugao but blasted over with the rival goalkeeper at his mercy. Mark buttressed Navelim's lead scoring at the half time.

 Crossing over, Mormugao restored parity with Sidney Lucas scoring a brace.

In the tie-breaker, Clinton Niasso, Terrance Miranda, Dunstan Fernandes, Valinton DSilva and Nash Pereira succeeded for Navelim. Johnson Horta, Sherwyn Abranches, Johann Mesquita and Sidney Lucas found the net for Mormugao.

Danstan Fernandes and Malappa Bizzargi (Navelim) and Sydney Lucas received yellow cards.
