AMBELIM: Our Lady of the Rosary High School swamped Pwalawalkar Higher Secondary School in the opening match of the school girls’ league in the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports football tournament here on Tuesday.

The winners, who led 2-0 at half-time, fired in five goals in the second session to underline their dominance at the Ganeshpuri Sports Complex. Player of the match Michelle Mascarenhas, Monica DeMello and Kyra Sequeira scored two goals each while Shanti Divar swelled the tally with a late strike.

The junior boys’ qualifiers were well contested with Assumpta Convent High School and Mae Dos Porbes High School prevailing in penalty shootouts while St Thomas High School edged out Mahanandu G Nail Memorial High School 1-0.

Assagao Union High School had it relatively easy as they downed Ramakant D Khalap High School 3-1 at Ganeshpuri.

At the Ambelim ground, Assumpta Convent defeated Our Lady Mother of the Poor 9-7 on penalties after both teams were locked 2-2 at regulation time. Pio Gomes (17th minute) and Jolvio Fernandes (21st) had ensured Our Lady led 2-1 for most part of the match. However, Nigel Fernandes' 58th minute strike gave a lifeline to Assumpta, who had got their first goal through Wayne Fernandes in the 20th minute.

At Father Agnel's ground, Kenneth DaCosta was the hero for St Thomas, scoring a 52nd minute goal to go past Mahanandu.
