PY Nuvem squeeze past Verna, enter semis

RAIA: Parish Youth Nuvem defeated Verna SC 1-0 to enter the semi-finals of the 46th Custodio Memorial football tournament, organised by Raia Sporting and played at Raia Panchayat ground, on Sunday .

Verna striker Beneston Piecton had the first chance of the match in the 2nd minute but the latter’s shot took a deflection off rival defender Hayson Velho and went out of play.

Nuvem striker Jerose Oliveira took control of the ball from Shubert Colaco and dribbled past Ryan Costa, Maristo Abranches and Noel Silva, and slammed the ball past Verna keeper Royal Moniz to score the only goal of the match in the fourth minute.

Verna’s Remedious Vaz tried a solo effort but his effort hit the rival post and went out of play. Nuvem led 1-0 at the break.

The second half had a spiky start with Parish Youth's Schubert Colaco picking up a yellow card.

Parish Youth goalkeeper made a point blank save when he kept out a sure goal from Clive Coelho.

The winger cut in from the right and dribbled past his marker to find himself just three yards in front of the goal and only the goalkeeper to beat. Coelho's shot was saved by the keeper as he punched the ball away.

It was a see-saw battle and Schubert missed a simple tap in after the Verna goalkeeper spilled a free-kick from Stanley D'Mello.

Verna missed a gilt edged chance when Beneston P missed scuffled a shot from five yards out as the defenders cleared.

Verna kept pushing for a goal but PY Nuvem managed to hold off some onslaught to earn victory.
