PANJIM: In a rather surprise and unexpected move, the Sports Authority of Goa has written to all the State Sports Association seeking their opinion on the National Sports Development Code of India, on Thursday.

“I am to inform you that, the National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI) 2011 is enforced by the Department of the Ministry Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India,” said VM Prabhudesai in his letter to the SSA.

“The Hon’ble Union Sports Minister has further appealed to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa to take steps to implement/ enforce the provisions of the NSDCI by enacting a law or by issuing suitable instructions to free the State/ District level sports bodies which are run by a few as their fiefdom,” read the statement.

The move is truly a great one but what is surprising is the fact that the letter which was sent to the Goa Chief Minister by the Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India on May 4, 2018 has been passed on to the State associations by the SAG seeking their opinions after nearly five months.

“Most of the National Sports Federations have adopted the NSDCI guidelines, especially about the ‘tenure’ and ‘age’. You are therefore requested to submit your comments on the salient features / guidelines of the NSDCI 2011 to be immediately implemented in the State of Goa which may reach this office positively within 8 days i.e. by 20/10/2018, as the replies from the State Sports Associations are to be compiled and placed before the State Govt. and the Hon’ble High Court of Bombay at Goa.  Kindly treat this matter on priority being a High Court matter,” read the statement.

What’s even more surprising is the fact, SAG’s wait to send the mail regarding the Sports Code to various associations after the elections of the Goa Olympic Association. According to the sources it has been learnt that a petition was filed by a table tennis player and coach in the High Court of Bombay at Goa. The specific prayer was against Goa TT association and general prayer to implement Sports Code for all sports bodies in Goa. The Goa TT association elections were not stayed, since the specific prayer was made just two days prior to the elections but the matter on Sports Code has been posted for further hearing and will come up shortly.

And due to the above petition the SAG and the government has been forced to write to associations and have to file their reply to this.

It can be also recollected that the Goa Football Association is the only sports body to implement the Sports Code.

It can be noted that several sports associations in the State are been headed by individuals for more than a decade.
