MAPUSA: Salgaocar FC registered a hard fought solitary goal win over Dempo SC in the GFA’s First Division League play-off at Duler stadium, here on Friday.

Dempo did most of the attacking but it was their opponents who scored in the 37th minute from a free kick. Harshad Madkaikar sent it to skipper Kenny Rodrigues who rose above the Dempo defenders to connect it with a strong header.

Earlier, Dempo's skipper Shreyash Naik saw two of his strikes being collected by Salgaocar's custodian Tanesh Kankonkar.

The best chance for Dempo to take the lead came at the half an hour mark but Jimmy Colaco was thwarted by Salgaocar's custodian in a one-on-one situation.

Salgaocar's goalkeeper Tanesh also came to his team's rescue. First, he halted Rohan Mangaonkar's cross and later he collected Sairon Albuquerque's free-kick.

On crossing over, once again it was the Golden Eagles who time and again attacked the rival citadel but their strikers failed to score.

Dempo continued to exert pressure and Anish Gadar hit a rival defender from close while a rasping 25-yard shot by defender Sairon Albuquerque travelled just over the horizontal.

It was a delight to witness the last line of Salgaocar’s defence along with their custodian Tanesh holding on to their slender one-goal lead till the final hooter.
