Velsao SCC register solitary goal win against Guardian Angel SC

MAPUSA: Riding on a brace by Victorino Fernandes and Marcus Mascarenhas, Sporting Clube De Goa dismantled Bardez Football Club 5-1 in the eleventh round match of the Goa Professional League, organized by GFA, played at Duler stadium, here on Monday.

With Monday’s win Sporting are just one point behind table toppers FC Goa with 25 points while Bardez FC remain on 6 points from 10 matches.

After a goalless first half, Sporting were rampant on changing ends with Victorino Fenandes and Marcus Mascarenhas scoring a brace while Alton Vaz also got his name of the score sheet and Babun Das also found the net for Bardez FC.

The match really lacked spark until the 30th minute when Sporting keeper Melroy Fernandes rushed out of his goal and brought down Bardez ONG Lepcha just outside the penalty box but was very lucky to just escape with just a caution from referee Sharad Naik.

Sporting’s Marcus Mascarenhas who was introduced into the action in the 35th minute squandered an easy sitter when he failed to get any touch to a dangerous looking cross by Victorino.

Cajetan Fernandes was unlucky in not finding the nets for Flaming Oranje, after getting past couple of Bardez defenders he let go a rasping right footer which was somehow blocked by the Bardez defender from close range.

Changing ends, both teams needing a win started aggressively with Sporting almost find the breakthrough goal when a long throw in by Sporting’s George D’Souza was intelligently flicked by Marcus to a well positioned Cajetan who surprisingly headed the ball over the crossbar

Bardez nearly punished Sporting for their missed chances when Rungsing Muinao sent a defence splitting pass to ONG Lepcha whose grounder hit the side post and rebounded into play with the Sporting keeper Melroy rooted to his spot.

In the 52nd minute, Marcus finally found the back of the net with a clever chip over the advancing Bardez keeper Royal Basumatory after being teed up by Fady Riad.

Bardez replied back strongly by levelling terms within four minutes when Richard Cardozo’s corner was not well cleared by Sporting defence and Babun Das who was lurking in the penalty box smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Alton Vaz then restored Sporting’s lead guiding the ball into the empty net after Marcus header from Cajetan’s free-kick was too hot for the Bardez keeper Royal to handle to make it 2-1.

Victorino Fernandes who had a quiet outing in the entire match then spurned into action in the closing minutes by scoring two goal in the 78th and 83rd minutes while Marcus also completed his brace to round the score tally to 5-1 to the joyous celebration of the teammates and supporters.

Meanwhile, at Rosary ground, Navelim, Velsao Sports and Cultural Club stunned Guardian Angel SC with a narrow 1-0 win.

The all-important goal was scored by Laiwang Bohham in the 83rd minute.
