NAGOA: Sporting Clube de Goa handed a surprising 2-0 defeat upon Goan Football Club in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League match played at Nagoa ground, on Friday.
Sporting Clube de Goa now move on to 44 points from 21 games while Goan FC remain top of the table on 51 points from 21 matches. However, Goan FC now need atleast a draw in their final league match as they have a better head-to-head record against Dempo Sports Club, who are also tied on 51 points, though the Golden Eagles have a better goal-difference then the FC Goa Developmental side.
Goan FC fielded upcoming stars with the likes of Liston Colaco, Princeton Rebello, Savio Gama, Hayden Fernandes and Aaren Silva while Sporting Clube fielded their regular side with Akeraj Martins and Stendly Fernandes playing upfront with Clemente Joseph and Marcus Mascarenhas supporting the lad.
Both the teams played possession play in the first 45 minutes and despite some actions neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first session.
Crossing over, Sporting Clube de Goa broke the deadlock in the 61st minute through Akeraj Martins.
Sporting Clube’s Cajetan, who played as right midfielder played a through ball to U-20 player Trijoy Dias who played a first time cross in the box to Akeraj Martins, who made no mistake as he easily tapped in the ball to break the deadlock.
The goal came as a blow for the young Goan FC side who were soon gifted an opportunity to restore parity when they were awarded a penalty kick.
Sporting Clube’s Clement’s clearance from inside the 18-yard box his own teammate Peter’s arm and the referee straight away pointed towards the spot.
Goan FC’s experienced youngster Liston Colaco stepped over but his shot was brilliantly saved by Sporting CLube keeper Melroy who dived full towards his right to deny the senior ISL FC Goa player.
Sporting Clube de Goa’a Akeraj Martins doubled the account in the 79th minute with another tap in shot after he was fed from the flank. .
