GUIRDOLIM: St Anthony Sports Club,  Assolda got the better of Parish Youth Nuvem by 2-1 to move to the quarter-finals in the 15th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club, at Chandor Church ground, on Tuesday.

Assolda would have scored in the very first minute but veteran medio Succour Fernandes was unlucky as his long range shot rebounded off the cross bar.

Both the teams displayed attacking brand of football. Nuvem suffered a setback early in the match as their star striker Jerose Oliveira limped off the ground in the 10th minute.

Changing over, Assolda came up with new ideas and almost took the lead in the 45th minute but Carry Vaz missed an easy sitter with only the rival keeper at his mercy.

Assolda’s Carry Vaz made amends for his earlier miss when he tried his luck from a distance only for the Nuvem keeper to spill the ball into his own net thus giving Assolda the lead.

Nuvem then committed more men forward and were unlucky on a couple of occasions as their strikers hit the side netting.

In the 58th minute, Assolda’s Succour Fernandes played a long ball into the Nuvem half which sailed over the defence and the Nuvem goalkeeper failed to come off his line and Sidney Vaz scored an easy goal for Assolda.

Nuvem were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when Sidney Vaz brought down Cedar Colaco who looked set to score.

Cedar himself stepped up to take the penalty and scored.

The score read 2-1 in favour of Assolda at the end of the match. Assolda will now meet DBO Fatorda on February 6 in the quarter-finals.
