RAIA: St Savio Sports Club, Calangute, scored a 8-7 win via tie-breaker over Curtorim Gymkhana to move into quarter-finals of the 16th London Trophy inter-village football tournament organised by Goa Velha Sports Club, at Goa Velha Sports Club ground, on Sunday.

In a lacklustre encounter, which was confined to the midfield, St Savio SC’s Saish Palyekar, had a look at the goal but his effort was saved by Floyd Hilario in the Curtorim Gymkhana goal in the 22nd minute of play. St Savio Sports Club surged ahead in the 28th minute of play through promising striker Fernandes, who shot past the Curtorim Gymkhana keeper Floyd Hilario after Curtorim Gymkhana defender Rhay Dias failed to clear a Colin Siero long ball. 

St Savio SC led 1-0 at the half time.

In the second half, St Savio SC’s Fazel D’Souza missed a glorious opportunity to increase the lead when he headed onto the post with the Curtorim Gymkhana keeper. 

Floyd Hilario beaten after Floyd Hilario had initially parried the ball back in play in the 51st minute of play. 

Curtorim Gymkhana scored the equaliser through the boots of Manuel Castanha who shot home off a Joy Hilario’s free-kick in the 66th minute of play. 

At the end of regulation time, both teams settled for a goalless draw.

In the resultant tie-breaker, Curtorim Gymkhana scored through Joy Hilario, Rhay Dias, Afileo Fernandes, Milagres Fernandes, Anslem Fernandes and Josslan Fernandes. Manuel Castanha effort was saved by the St Savio SC goalkeeper. 

St Savio SC netted through Mervin D’Souza, Fasel D’Souza, Romero Fernandes, Fernandes, Deep Govekar, Saish Palyekar and Chaitanya Haldankar.

Fernandes of St Savio SC was awarded the man-of-the-match by Joy Gonsalves, player and member of Goa Velha SC based in the United Kingdom.
