PANJIM: The defending champions St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, won Inter-Collegiate Hockey Men Championship 2023-24, organised by Goa University, at the Hockey Turf, Dayanand Bandodkar Krida Sankool, Peddem, Mapusa, recently.
In the well contested championship final, St Xavier’s College defeated Sant Sohirobanath Ambiye’s Government College of Arts and Commerce, Pernem, in the penalty shootout, 5-4. The match had reached 2-2 deadlock in the regulation time, compelling the teams to battle it out for the championship in a penalty shootout.
In the men’s semi-final, the Government College, Pernem, defeated SV's Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies, Mapusa, 2-0. And St Xavier’s College defeated Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, 8-0.
In total eight teams participated in the four days inter-college hockey championship. Best player was awarded to Abhishek Pathak of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa. Chief guest Dr Elroy Pinto, College Director of Physical Education and Sports, St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim and guest of honour Victor Albuquerque, Hockey
Coach, Sports Authority of Goa along with Balachandra Jadar, Assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University, presented the medals and trophies to the winners and runners-up.
