MAPUSA: United Club of Verna were indeed a better side as they drubbed St Anthony Sports Club, Marna-Siolim, 3-0, to book their place into the final of Candolim Panchayat Cup organised by Candolim SC at Dr Gustavo Monteiro ground, Candolim, Monday.
UC Verna colts did not take much time to go ahead. In the 10th minute of play, Clifton Rebello lobbed the ball over the onrushing St Anthony SC keeper, 1-0.
Just seven minutes later, St Anthony SC lost a glorious chance to level terms when Sahil Pomburpekar shot sailed inches over the crossbar. Another chance this time by Vishesh Sawant power-packed shot was brilliantly saved by UC Verna keeper Royal Moniz.
In the 40th minute of play, St Anthony SC keeper Sudhin Shirodkar brought a good save of a try from Clifton. While St Anthony SC lads failed to score, UC Verna’s Clifton completed his brace as he coolly tapped the ball to the right of the keeper, 2-0.
In the closing stages of the match, UC Verna scored their third goal through Elrich Fernandes, who hoodwinked couple of St Anthony SC defenders and placed the ball into the goal, 3-0. Clifton Rebello of UC Verna received the man-of-the-match award.
